Over the last two decades, the Douglas Shire, and in particular Port Douglas, has become a mecca for international visitors, those "down south" escaping bitterly cold winters, and expatriate staff living and working in the Gulf States and Pacific Rim looking to unwind in familiar surroundings.
This has created a market driven need for holiday accommodation of all types. Despite predictions, the supply each year has not over taken demand, in fact data shows that at peak periods there is still a shortage of beds.
Of course, the building regulations have had a bearing on this and will continue to restrict what can be built and where, and land is now at a premium in Port Douglas.
In the early days, most long term rental accommodation was occupied by Sheraton and Radisson hotel staff, but as permanent houses and apartments have been replaced by new resorts and hotels, there has been a greater demand for staff and management accommodation, and a significant shortage shortage of quality homes.
